Spotlight on... Darla Bressler

This is the next installment in a series of blog posts to help you get acquainted with some of the people who work in the library.  Today we introduce you to one of our Reference Librarians, who you probably have seen before.

What is your name?  Darla Bressler

What is your title? Reference Librarian/Education & Social Sciences Subject Specialist

What is a typical day like for you?  One of the things I like most about my job is the variety.  On any given day you can find me preparing for or teaching classes, helping students find resources for their assignments at the Research Center, selecting books for the Juvenile and Curriculum Collections, or one of many other responsibilities that contribute to a smoothly functioning library and the academic success of our students.

What else should people know about you?  I enjoy walking and reading.  I especially like reading and learning about children’s and young adult literature, and I would do it even if it were not important for my job.  I also love to visit family and friends in Western Pennsylvania whenever I can.

How can people get in contact with you? Office: 218 Andruss Library  Phone: 389-4656  Email:  dbressle@bloomu.edu

New Year, New Look for 2013!

Those of you entering the library for the new semester will notice something different about the main floor…we’ve updated! Brand new carpeting has been installed, and the furniture has been reconfigured for better accommodation.
The staff hopes that these changes are not only visually pleasing, but purposeful as well. Tables, carrels, and lounge furniture now have convenient accessibility to power outlets, group interaction, and ease of movement. As an added plus, enjoy the view! Additional open window space has been allocated for a pleasant, airy atmosphere as you hit the books. The new carpeting in a refreshing blue tone is the finishing touch to the new look for 2013.
We would love to know what you think of this new arrangement. Brief feedback surveys are available at the Circulation Desk, or if you prefer, express your thoughts on the easel board placed nearby. Of course, you can also choose to reply here with your comments and suggestions.
Your opinion is very valuable as the staff at Andruss Library continues to be proactive in serving the needs of the BU population and general public. Thank you in advance for your time…and please check back as results will be posted in the very near future.
As of this week, we are encouraged by the positive comments! Some excerpts from the first day of survey returns include:
"The atmosphere looks friendly and inviting."
View of seating area, Andruss Library main floor
"The whole room seems brighter now!"
"Furniture arrangement is convenient for group discussions."
Keep the comments coming in- we enjoy hearing from you!

Welcome back!

Everyone at Andruss Library wishes all new and returning students, faculty, and staff a happy and productive start to the Spring Semester.

Over the semester, we will be using this blog to reply to many of the comments and trends noted in last semester's LibQual survey.  We've been busy crunching the numbers and reading over the many written comments that we received, so keep an eye out for that. As always, if you have any questions about the LibQual survey results or anything at all related to the library, you can always ask us anything.

Best wishes for Winter Break

Best wishes for a happy, restful Winter Break.  And a big congratulations to all of the December Graduates!

If you will be on campus over the break, please be aware of the following:
  • The library will be open for shortened hours.  In general, we will be open from 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday only.  We will be closed for the week between Christmas and New Years.  For exact hours, please consult our Hours page.
  • Over the break, the carpet on the first floor of the library will be replaced.  This means that there will be some commotion and rearrangement of items on that floor.  If you need assistance with accessing the newspapers, Reference Collection, Popular Reading Collection, microforms, or anything else usually found on the first floor, please ask at the Circulation Desk.

Spotlight on... Kellie Fisher

This is the next installment in a series of blog posts to help you get acquainted with some of the people who work in the library. Today we introduce you to one of our student workers.

What is your name?  Kellie Fisher

What is your major?  Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

What do you do in the library?  I work in the Acquisitions department on the second floor.  My responsibilities include handling all incoming periodicals, sorting and delivering mail, answering questions, and performing miscellaneous tasks as needed.

What do you enjoy most about your job?   I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. I have always loved libraries, and working at the library is a nice break from the stress of classes. It also provides a flexible schedule so that I can keep up with my school work and participate in other programs and activities.

What’s the best class you’ve taken at BU?   My favorite classes so far have been Comp 1 with Professor Stuart and Intro to Audiology with Dr. Zalewski.

What else do you want people to know about you?   Besides working at the library, I am a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and the Presidential Leadership Program, which provides a variety of wonderful educational, networking, social, and volunteer opportunities.
