An Assignment that Prevents Plagiarism



An article on the Magna Teaching & Learning blog details an assignment developed by 2 accounting professors, McGown and Lightbody, that has significantly cut down on instances of plagiarism in their classes. Students must identify and correct 10 instances of plagiarism in a faculty-written essay after completing an online tutorial on plagiarism.

Most students learn the basics of how to cite and paraphrase in their first year composition courses and are expected to apply what they've learned to courses in their major. But each discipline has its own conventions, and students need additional, repeated instruction and practice within the discipline.
